Normally at this time of summer, Florida residents can look forward to the local magnolia and honeysuckle in bloom. This summer, another Florida bloom is getting national attention; a massive overgrowth of algae from Lake Okeechobee has spread wildly and led Governor Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency in the surrounding counties. Bright […]

When water-soluble compounds are washed away from soil, it can leave behind non-soluble pollutants. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, or TCLP, is a popular and cost-effective procedure to extract these types of chemicals for testing. When done properly, TCLP allows the soil to be tested for each component from a list of 40 potentially toxic metals […]
Read MoreVolatile Organic Compounds are a large group of carbon based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. While some VOCs come with an extremely pungent smell, others have no odor at all. There are nearly thousands of VOCs produced and constantly used in our daily lives, some of the most common examples include: Benzene Acetone […]
Read MoreThe acronym BTEX refers to the compounds Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene. These compounds occur naturally in crude oil and can also be found in sea water in close proximity to petroleum and gas deposits. Other natural sources of BTEX compounds include emissions from forest fires and gases from volcanoes. However, the manmade releases of […]
Read MoreTCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) testing helps determine the mobility of both organic and inorganic analytes present in liquid, solid, and multi-matrix wastes. If you have a hazardous waste producing facility, the state of Florida requires you to conduct testing for all waste materials. Similarly, discharge testing is also a requirement for companies that discharge […]
Read MoreBTEX– the group of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes – is notoriously known for its contamination of soil and ground water. These elements are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) derived from petroleum. The elements typically affect water and land near natural gas production sites, gas stations, and above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) and under-ground storage tanks (USTs) […]
Read MoreWith an increase in the use of synthetic products, the amount of hazardous waste being generated by households is also elevating. Amongst others, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the most harmful pollutants households are producing at an enormously high rate. VOCs are gaseous substances emitted from certain solids and liquids, including a variety of chemicals […]

Read MoreThe consequences of improper solid waste disposal are inevitable. Solid wastes, generating gases and leachatedue to climatic conditions, microbial decomposition, and other chemical reactions, present serioushealth hazards and environmental concerns. While biodegradablematerialsare creating unhygienic conditions, the toxic metals and hazardous materials in industrial waste are causing physicochemical and biological changes, thereby affecting the entire ecological system […]
Read MoreFor the longest of time, hazardous waste, as disposed by industries, has been controlling the lives and the environment we live in. Every year, industries dispose of millions of tons of hazardous waste that enters the environment, causing havoc. It is precisely for that reason the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed the Resource Conservation and […]
